Who would have guessed back in 2009 that a video game with no rules, no boundaries, and blocky characters more reminiscent of games from the 1980s than the Aughts would be a hit?
That game is Minecraft and today at Minecraft Live 2023, the company announced that it has now sold more than 300 million licenses.
Minecraft was already the best-selling game of all time and, at this point, Mojang Studios, the creators of the game, just seems to be rubbing it in.
For context, Minecraft has sold more than the next two best-selling games on the list combined: Grand Theft Auto V and Tetris.
So what makes the game so popular and so enduring?
The game offers an open platform that has no boundaries or goals which allows players to create and explore at their own pace.
The game’s infinite possibilities for building, crafting, and customization keep players engaged.
Minecraft has a vibrant modding community that continuously adds new content and features to the game.
These mods expand the gameplay and cater to various preferences, making it appealing to a wide audience
Minecraft emphasizes cooperation and creativity over competition.
Players work together to achieve common goals, fostering a sense of community and camaraderie.
The ability to play Minecraft on various platforms, including PCs, consoles, and mobile devices, allows players to connect and collaborate regardless of their preferred platform.
Even educators and parents have embraced the game because of the positive and creative nature of the play.
Mojang was acquired by Microsoft in 2014 and a search for “Microsoft ruined Minecraft” will turn up a large and passionate base of unhappy players.
However, the game continues to average nearly 100 million unique users monthly and shows no real sign of slowing down.
