The app launched to much fanfare in July 2023 and reached 30 million users in a day, making it the fastest-growing app of all time.
However, the lack of basic functions limited the usefulness of the app, which was considered initially to be an “X-killer” as Elon Musk’s X began to fall from favor.
Despite previous concerns about its viability, recent data reveals a significant resurgence spurred in part by subsequent releases that closed many of the holes from the early versions.
In December 2023, Threads experienced a threefold increase in downloads compared to the previous month, securing its position among the top 10 most downloaded apps across both the App Store and Google Play.
Appfigures reports that Threads garnered 12 million new downloads on the App Store, claiming the No. 4 spot, and 16 million on Google Play, ranking No. 8. Combined, it landed at No. 6 in terms of new installs, dispelling any notions of its demise.
The revitalization in December was also fueled by Meta’s strategic advertising on Facebook, which propelled the app’s growth.
Currently boasting an estimated 160 million users, Threads is on an upward trajectory, potentially attracting new users from Meta’s integration into the “fediverse” and recent feature enhancements.
Moreover, Threads’ recent initiatives, including the introduction of an endpoint for third-party developers and collaboration with marketing tool provider Shareaholic, have invigorated its ecosystem and contributed to its ascending chart rankings.
