MacOS 14, better known as Somona, got its official launch day recently at the Apple “Wonderlust” event in Cupertino, CA.
Sonoma continues Apple’s trend of tying its Mac operating systems more closely with the iPhone IOS to provide a more seamless transition between all of your Apple devices.
The IOS widgets can now be utilized on your desktop.
As always, the new operating system offers a range of new features and functions.
Apple has focused a lot of these changes on augmenting its video conferencing capabilities by adding a variety of screen-sharing options.
Users of Presenter will be able to overlay themselves in front of their presentation to make it appear as if they are standing in front of a screen.
The new operating system will allow for closer tie-ins between products.
For instance, users will be able to start an idea in Notes and click a button to transfer those ideas into Pages for presentation.
Sonoma has added a handy search feature for Messages allowing users to find what they are looking for more quickly.
Safari adds several features that help users separate work tabs from personal ones, and augment search through the browser.
As always, the feature set for the new OS combines cosmetic changes, that are mostly for fun, with practical changes based on user feedback.
Behind the scenes, Sonoma offers developers some nice add-ons such as WidgetKit to build and support transitions between applications.
Developers can also explore deep learning capabilities through CoreML which offers models that create frameworks for enhancing user experiences.
